Carey served as a board member of BP America’s D&I Council and as executive sponsor for two of BP’s employee business resource groups, Energía (Hispanic) and the BP African American Network and is also actively involved in the Positively Ethnic Network (PEN). These organisations empower employees, encourage cultural fluency and drive a focus on D&I. He is also a mentor and sponsor to numerous minority employees to help drive their development. He participates in regular roundtable discussions with employees at all levels to seek feedback on how to be more inclusive. Externally, Carey is active in the community, including representing BP’s and his own passion for diversity and inclusion as a  2017 Chicago United Business Leader of Color. He encourages active BP engagement in diverse local schools, exemplified through their recognition as 2017 Corporation of the Year by Working in the Schools (WITS). He also pioneered a BP partnership with Howard University to encourage recruitment of African American employees.
